Barcelona’s most iconic Gaudí building: La Sagrada Familia
Let’s start with Barcelona’s most famous Gaudí building: La Sagrada Familía. We have to thank Antoní Gaudi for this architectural masterpiece that attracts thousands of visitors to Barcelona every single week.
And the best part about it: The Sagrada Familia still remains unfinished, but there are plans to finish it in 2026. Antoni Gaudí died long before the construction was done and is buried in the crypt of the Sagrada Familia. I can assure you that the design of this basilica is truly something that you have never seen before. It combines Gothic and Art Nouveau Elements and the attention to detail will blow your mind.
If you are visiting Barcelona, you really should make sure to put it on your Barcelona bucket list and see it from inside. Make sure to book your tickets a couple of days before (the earlier the better) as they are booked out for days in advance. I would recommend booking the audio guide as well since it will explain the history and the architecture behind the Sagrada Familia.
And if you want to make the most out of your Sagrada Familia visit, I do recommend getting tickets to visit it during the famous Golden hour (between 5-7pm, depending on the season). The sunlight falling through the colorful windows is a phenomenon you cannot miss!
You can book tickets with the audio guide for the Sagrada Familia here.
2. The Gaudí monument locals used to hate: Casa Milá
At the very top of Passeig de Gràcia is a very special Gaudí building: Casa Milá, nicknamed La Pedrera. “La Pedrera” means “stone quarry” in Spanish and refers to the building’s grey design with a harsh stone facade. Locals were so appalled about its looks and were scared it was going to “decrease the value of other buildings close by”. Can you believe somebody said that about a famous Gaudí landmark?
Casa Milà is a true modernist building and you will see Gaudí’s use of natural elements in its design. It was originally an apartment building, but half of it is office space now. The highlight of this building is the gorgeous rooftop terrace with its famous mosaic chimneys. Your visit includes panoramic views of Barcelona from up there.
You can find more information and book your entry tickets for La Pedrera here.
3. Barcelona’s Gaudí building highlight: Casa Batlló
When walking down Passeig de Gràcia you will find one of the most beautiful Gaudí buildings on this list: Casa Batlló. Thanks to its surreal, dreamy facade it will be impossible to miss it!
Casa Batlló really shows the creative genius that Gaudí was. It was built as a residential home for the Gaudí family. What you can find here are marine-inspired details, original furniture from the Batlló family, Gaudí’s famous mosaic tiles, and elements from nature. Gaudí himself said, that you will never find straight lines in nature, and therefore no straight lines in his designs.
Casa Batlló regularly offers light shows, especially around Christmas time. What I most liked when visiting was the impressive light well, famous for its blue color and creative design.
You can find more information about Casa Batlló and book your entry tickets here, which I highly recommend booking before-hand. It is one of the more expensive Gaudí attractions to visit with entry tickets costing around 35€, but a true classic monument to visit!
4. Park Güell, Gaudí monument with panoramic views of Barcelona
A bit further away from the city center of Barcelona lies one of the most colorful Gaudí buildings of Barcelona: Park Güell
The history of Park Güell is again related to businessman Eusebi Güell, who we already mentioned before in other Gaudí buildings. He acquired a large zone outside of Barcelona and hired Gaudí to draw plans for a beautiful family park there. And the outcome is the iconic Park Güell that we can visit today. Thanks to the unbeatable location of the park we can find panoramic views from Barcelona there.
What else can we find in Park Güell? You will see gorgeous mosaic tiles, the beautiful two fairytale houses, and a lot of green spaces to relax in. In my opinion, Park Güell is one of the most beautiful monuments of Barcelona and should be part of your Gaudí building itinerary.
If you want to visit Park Güell during your Barcelona stay, I recommend booking your tickets beforehand. When my family visited, they had to book their tickets 4 days in advance. You can book your tickets and find more information here.
5. The hidden gem of Gaudí buildings in Barcelona: Palau Güell
If you ask me, Palau Güell is such a hidden gem in Barcelona. It’s extra! It’s fancy! Very Gothic! And it’s dark! It is one of the lesser-known Gaudí buildings in Barcelona. But in my opinion, it is so underrated!
If you look at our Barcelona Gaudi Buildings Map, you will find its location close to the iconic street of La Rambla, which makes it even more convenient to visit it on a Barcelona Gaudí walking tour! According to history, Eusebi Güell wanted to have a residential building close to his parents’ home, which is why La Rambla was chosen as its location. Back then, the choice for this location was a bit questionable. La Rambla used to be full of w*horeho*ses, gambling studios and
What I especially loved about Palau Güell was the dark interior and the organ in the main room. If you are lucky, you might catch a performance during your time there.
You can find more information about Palau Güell and book your tickets here.
6. Casa Vicens, the underrated Gaudí creation in Barcelona
Now we are coming to a very mysterious Gaudí building in Barcelona: Casa Vicens. Casa Vicens is located in the middle of a residential area of the Gràcia neighborhood and was Gaudí’s first major work!
Casa Vicens is an impressive building in Barcelona and it stands out with its oriental and neoclassical influences. This monument stands out with its vivid green and red colors, and the decoration has so much attention to detail. The highlight of Casa Vicens is the “smoking room”, full of oriental features and dark colors.
I can only give you my opinion as a local in Barcelona and say that I find Casa Vicens to be so underrated! What you will find here is a lesser-known Gaudí building that is beyond beautiful and so worth visiting!
Another benefit is the price of the ticket. Compared to Casa Milá and Casa Batlló, the entry ticket for Casa Vicens is only 20€. You can find them here. Plus, you also get to enjoy the neighborhood of Gràcia, which is one of my favorite areas in Barcelona!
7. See the famous church that served as a model for the Sagrada Familia: Colonia Güell
Let’s move to a Gaudí construction outside of Barcelona! You will find it when checking our “Barcelona Gaudi buildings map” when you look into the South West of Barcelona. Colonia Güell is one of the industrial villages of the town of Santa Coloma de Cervelló, 23 km away from Barcelona. Back then these industrial areas were constructed to give factory workers a home close to their work location. These industrial areas had everything from homes, schools, hospitals, and of course, churches.
Gaudí’s work there focuses on the church crypt, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. When you visit it, you will see Gaudí’s handwriting right away: A building full of arches and Mosaic formations in vibrant colors. The crypt was Gaudí’s experimental work and a basis of what the Dagrada Familia was supposed to look like later. And the most interesting fact: Just like the Sagrada Familia, the church of Colonia Güell remains unfinished.
If you are a true architecture fan and want to see more than just the basic Gaudí monuments, this one is for you! Visiting Colonia Güell is the perfect one-day trip from Barcelona.
8. Casa Calvet, a residential building with a façade that was designed by Gaudí
Antoní Gaudí designed this residential building in 1899, and we can find it in our Barcelona Gaudi buildings map in the Eixample neighborhood. Believe me, so many people walk by this building every day and they probably do not even know that its architecture was designed by him!
The facade shows a blend of modernism and neoclassical styles. The balconies have floral features with iron details. But the most important part is the rooftop, which resembles a dragon’s back.
This building is the perfect example of Gaudí making a simple residential building into a piece of art.
9. Try to find “Casa Bellesguard” on the Barcelona Gaudi Buildings Map
Casa Bellesguard was completed in 1909 and is located on the outskirts of Barcelona, right at the beginning of the Collserola hills. Gaudí’s inspiration for Bellesquard was a medieval building with the same name.
Looking at this building, it strongly reminds me of the witches’ house in “Hansel and Gretel”, due to its unique shape. You will see sharp angles and the striking mosaic tower, from which you have great panoramic views of Barcelona.
By the way, it’s not far away from Casa Vicens. So if you want to see two of the lesser known Gaudí buildings in Barcelona this is your chance!
Make sure to book your entry ticket in advance, so that you do not go all the way and then are not allowed to enter!
10. Colegio de Teresianas, a school in Barcelona with Gaudí’s design
Our last building on the “Barcelona Gaudi Buildings Map” is a school that Gaudí designed for the Teresian Order, which was completed in 1911. You can find this Gaudí masterpiece in the Sant Gervasi neighborhood, right in between Casa Vicens and Bellesquard.
What you will find here is a fortress-like structure. It still functions as a school and is therefore closed to the public. Imagine going to school in a world-class Gaudí building!
Here, you can see that Gaudí’s emphasis was on functional architecture with an elegant design and lots of natural light. The building features beautiful arches, colorful tile formations and lush gardens.
This is probably the true gem of Gaudí buildings and the ones people know about the least. How fascinating!
Bonus Gaudí Creations: Did you know about the Lanterns on Plaça Reial?
If you are reading this blog post you might be travelling to Barcelona soon and are researching about the different Gaudí constructions there. That is why I decided a special surprise here.
The bonus point on our “Barcelona Gaudi Buildings Map”, a hidden gem located on Barcelona’s famous Plaça Reial: The Gaudí lanterns.
When Gaudí was a young design student those lanterns were the first job the city of Barcelona gave him. And of course, he made sure those were not just simple lanterns. He turned them into Gaudí lanterns by giving them a unique design with helmets.
Plaça Reial is close to the famous “La Rambla” street and the Boquería market. Once you arrive, make sure to check out the plaza and look for these special lanterns.
